What is the Fat Flush Diet?

The Fat Flush Diet is a diet that combines a diet and detox all in one weight loss program. It does sound pretty great - I mean, a diet that flushes your fat out of your body? Yes, please! But does it actually work? 

What is the Fat Flush Diet?

The Fat Flush Diet was created by Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, a nutritionist who noticed how much her patients struggled on a low-fat diet. She thought that rather than restricting fat entirely, individuals who were trying to lose weight should focus instead on eating the rights kind of fats, and staying away from the wrong ones. 

There a few different Fat Flush plans you can purchase on the Fat Flush website. In this article, I will focus on the New Fat Flush Plan. 

What Can I Eat on the New Fat Flush Plan?

This plan is broken up into 4 phases:

You start off your Fat Flush diet with a 3-day liquid detox using Fat Flush smoothies and supplements. During this time, you will drink 64 oz of cranberry juice mixed with water throughout the day. You will stick to a low calorie and low carb diet, and are also encouraged to take Fat Flush supplements.  This phase is less restrictive. You are allowed to eat more carbs, as long as they are gluten-free. In this phase, you learn long-term eating strategies to help you continue to lose weight and maintain your goal weight once you have reached it.


Pros and Cons of the Fat Flush Diet

While the Fat Flush Diet does restrict your calorie intake, it is commonly regarded as a fad diet because of how restrictive it is, and because there are no studies that have proven it to be effective. Dr. Gittleman designed this diet plan around the idea that detoxing your liver can lead to amazing fat burning results, which is not a scientifically proven concept. 

It is also worth noting that that the phases require you to purchase supplements sold exclusively by the Fat Flush website. Make of that what you will.


You might lose weight using the New Fat Flush Diet plan, but that would most likely be due to the reduced calorie intake required by the diet, than to any other special properties of the diet itself. Bundles for the New Fat Flush Diet plan start at $90, and you can probably save yourself that money by downloading a free calorie counting app like MyFitnessPal and reducing your calorie intake yourself.
